Community Involvement

At ECUA, we care about our community because we live and work here. And as a local company, it's our privilege to give back in any way we can–from education to safety to helping those in need.

ECUA is committed to improving quality of life and making a positive difference in Escambia County. Our employees voluntarily contribute their time, resources and talents to several charitable efforts and thus strengthen our relationship with the community. Events and organizations ECUA employees support include:

American Cancer Society/ Relay For Life

ECUA employees have been a part the American Cancer Society Relay For Life for the past 15 years.  Last year (2010) the Relay For Life raised approximately $267,000 and the ECUA team came in 1st, raising over $15,000 in the fight to find a cure for cancer.  Over the years the ECUA team has raised nearly $200,000 for this worthwhile cause.

Boys and Girls Club

The employees of the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority have sponsored a Christmas Party for the Boys and Girls Club of Escambia County for 13 years. The party is hosted by ECUA for the club members on the last day of school before the Christmas break.  The core group of volunteers who plan the party help to decorate, serve food and coordinate the games.  The children are provided a meal, play games and finally have a visit from Santa with gifts for the kids.  All money, food and gifts are provided through employee efforts, donations and gifts.

Clean Sweep

The ECUA Sanitation Department participates in the program Clean Sweep to help keep our community clean. We team up with the Community and Environment Bureau and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department to target community redevelopment areas. Our employees volunteer to participate in the program to help protect our shared environment. Working together has allowed ECUA to provide local neighborhoods with pickup of debris to help Pensacola stay clean and green

Employee’s Golf Tournament

For the past 13 years ECUA employees have organized a golf tournament to help support the Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital.  In the 13 years this tournament has contributed over $149,500.  Last year’s donation helped with the building and construction of the Children’s Garden and Playroom renovation project located with the Purple Heart Kid’s Gang unit.  The tournament is held in April.

I Love Science

For the past 4 years the ECUA has participated in the “I LOVE Science” program (Increasing Local Opportunities for Volunteers Enthusiastic about Science).  The volunteer program was launched in 2006 to increase the frequency of hands-on science activities in local schools, to inspire future scientists, and to improve Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) science scores.  The 5th graders at Ensley Elementary School began learning about the ECUA Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) Program, which is designed to reduce the number of sewer pipe blockages caused by the improper disposal of fats, oils, and grease into sewer drains.  The students are also being introduced to the ECUA Residential Curbside Recycling Program that provides recycling service to over 73,000 customers in Escambia County.

March of Dimes

Since 1988, ECUA has participated in the March of Dimes Walk event, now identified as the March for Babies. Today, 23 years later, we still have a walk team and have several employees that are members of the Walk Committee. We have raised over $150,000 over the years with the help of our employees, their families, friends and our customers. The money raised goes to help find new ways to prevent premature birth and birth defects.

Protector of the Environment Award…

The ECUA works with local businesses to promote and improve the environmental impact that creates a positive, clean, and safe environment through our Fats, Oil, and Grease (FOG) and Backflow Programs.

The Authority’s goal is to ensure protection of public health through the provision of minimum requirements and standards for design, construction, operation, and maintenance of our potable water system.

To reward businesses in continuous compliance with the program’s guidelines, we acknowledge them as a “Protector of the Environment.” The goal of the award is for the general public to recognize the business as an environmentally clean and safe place to visit, support, and patronize.

United Cerebral Palsy

Each summer the ECUA employees participate in United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) “Get Casual for a Cause” day.  Our contributions remain local and assist in a variety of ways, helping the clients of the UCP. It is our pleasure to be part of this great celebration each and every year.

United Way

The ECUA employees have been a part of the United Way for 30 years.  In the past 11 years we have contributed over $110,000 to the local United Way Campaign of Escambia County.  It helps to achieve bold goals within the priorities of education, financial stability, and health.  These goals include helping children develop behaviors to succeed in life, reduce poverty and helping those with special needs to remain independent.
